WHAT IS A Pashmina?

Most people misunderstand Pashmina as fashionable shawls found in market but pashmina is not just the fashionable shawls. Pashmina with its unque softness and comforting warmth is a "diamond fabric" and the "soft gold of high Asia." It is the finest, softest and warmest wool available anywhere.These are known as “Cashmere” in India while they are called “Pashmina” in Nepal.

Pashmina is derived from the undercoat of the Chyangra (Capra Hircus) goat which lives thousands of feet above sea level in temperatures that drop to minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit for seven months of the year. When these “Chyangra” shed their soft, warm and silky fibers from the underbelly, the fibers are collected, cleaned and woven into pashminas.

These pashminas are so thin they can pass through a ring; hence they are also given the name "ring pashmina."

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A PURE PASHMINA FABRIC?

A pure 100% Pashmina fabric is spun and loomed by hand and not by a machine.So they are less homogenous, and, usually, the fringes will be natural and loose rather than twisted or knotted. A 100% pure Pashmina will be in one color tone from both sides because they are not blended from 2 or 3 plies of wool and silk yarn.

The pashmina fiber is the best fabric.However there are different grades of pashmina that depends on the length and width of the fiber used and the skill of the craftspeople that weave and dye the fibers.

WHAT ARE “100%PASHMINA”,”70% PASHMINA AND 30% SILK BLENDED PASHMINA” AND “50% PASHMINA AND 50% SILK BLENDED PASHMINA”?

A 100% pashmina refers to the pure pashmina wool and no silk is blended in the 100% pashmina.70% pashmina and 30% silk blended pashmina refers to pashmina  that has the mixture of 70% pure pashmina wool and 30% silk. And the 50% pashmina and 50% silk blended pashmina has a mixture of 50% pure pashmina and 50% silk. All the three pashmina have their own positive and negative aspects.

A 100% pure pashmina is softer, lighter and more luxurious compared to the others .However, the 100% pashminas or Cashmere are not as strong as the 70% pashmina and 30% silk blend. A 70% pashmina and 30% silk blended pashmina gives the warmth of pashmina and durability of silk. So it’s the preference of people that matters while buying a pashmina.Some may chose one kind while others may like the other kind.

The pashmina fibers under 15.5 microns in diameter are considered the best (the lesser the diameter the better it is considered).

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY 1-PLY, 2-PLY AND 3-PLY PASHMINA?

Plies are strands of fiber twisted together to make a piece of yarn. In one ply pashmina there is a single ply and thus are lighter and softer. Similarly "Two-ply" shawls are made by doubling up the pashmina threads. The result is a thicker cloth, which might feel soft and more beautiful. The 3 ply is made of more yarn than the 2 ply so it’s a thicker pashmina.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY PASHMINA?

Hand wash in lukewarm water using Woolite or a very mild hair shampoo is good idea to wash your pashmina.Also make sure the detergent is thoroughly dissolved before coming into contact with the pashmina. Do not wring or twist your pashmina. After removing excess water, dry flat the pashmina away from sunlight. Press with a damp cloth on top, using a cool iron. Iron from the inside of the pashmina or cover it with a piece of butter paper or cloth and then iron.
